NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 coming soon

Posted on Monday, October 12 2009 @ 20:22:19 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

The Tech Report reports NVIDIA may soon release another 40nm GPU, the GeForce GT 240. The GDDR3 version of this card will have a performance level between the GeForce 9600 GT and 9800 GT, while the GDDR5 edition will be faster than the 9800 GT.
This GeForce GT 240 is apparently based on the same 40-nm architecture as the GT 220 and G210, and it also has DirectX 10.1 support. IT168 claims the card has 96 stream processors, a 550MHz core clock speed, a 128-bit memory interface, and either 1GB of 900MHz DDR3 memory or 512MB of 900MHz GDDR5.

In 3DMark Vantage, the GDDR5 version outpaces the GeForce 9800 GT, and the DDR3 model sits between an underclocked, "green" version of the GeForce 9600 GT and the 9800 GT. In the older 3DMark06 test, both GT 240 variants slip behind the green 9600 GT at 1920x1200. That doesn't tell us a whole lot about potential game performance, although the 128-bit memory interface presumably puts the DDR3 part at a disadvantage.
