Microsoft to launch Metro, a PDF rival

Posted on Tuesday, April 26 2005 @ 17:11:10 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

Bill Gates presented a new file format at WinHEC to battle the PostScript and PDF-technology from the Adobe, Macromedia alliance. The new format from Microsoft is codenamed Metro and will use XML to store data.

Just like Adobe's PDF the company will offer Metro royalty-free. Developers will be able to ask for specifications and develop software for Metro.

Gates added that Longhorn will have built-in support for this new format, so users won't need to download additional programs to use it.
