Elon Musk warns about dangers of AI

Speaking at last week's AeroAstro conference at MIT, Elon Musk talked about the future of Tesla as well as a variety of other ventures. One of the more controversial statements he made concerned artificial intelligence, Musk warned we have to be very careful about artificial intelligence because it feels like summoning the demon. He added that mankind should watch AI development carefully, lest it become a threat to our very existence.

Musk's comments seem to be aimed largely at the defense industry, which is increasingly focusing on the creation of war robots designed to wound or kill humans.
We should be very careful about artificial intelligence... [it is perhaps] our biggest existential threat. With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon.

In all those stories where there's the guy with the pentagram and the holy water, it's like yeah he's sure he can control the demon. Didn't work out.

[Is any artificial intelligence] even close to being ready for prime time? I'm increasingly inclined to think there should be some regulatory oversight maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don't do something very foolish.
