Google launches its own IM client, Google Talk

Posted on Wednesday, August 24 2005 @ 14:10:59 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

Google today releases its own instant messaging client. The launch of this program was launch rumoured and now it's finally here. Talk has a very clean interface and allows you to login with your Gmail. However, don't expect features like smilies. It's still a very clean and tidy program designed to chat and voice calling with other people.

    Google Talk offers you:
  • Choice: Get in touch how and when you want to–over email, IM or a call
  • Quality: Talk through your computer but hear your friends as if they were in the same room
  • Convenience: Your Gmail contacts are pre-loaded into Google Talk so inviting or talking to your friends is just a click away
  • Google believes that users should have a choice in what applications they use for communication. Built to support industry standards, Google Talk enables Google users to connect to the Google Talk service and exchange IMs using any client that does the same, including Trillian, Adium, iChat, GAIM, and Psi.

The company is also committed to working with other service providers to create a federation model that enables users on any member network to talk to users on any other member network in a secure and abuse-free manner. Google is currently working with EarthLink to federate with their Vling communications service and with Sipphone on federating their Gizmo Project.

You can download Google Talk over here.
