Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Review

Posted on Friday, July 14 2006 @ 12:16:37 CEST by LSDsmurf

When Intel announced the code named Conroe processor, hundreds of unapproved reviews leaked onto the internet boasting infinitely small SuperPi calculation times under 20 seconds. That sounds pretty extreme to me, but I had suspicions. Preproduction units rarely truly represent the actual performance of a production processor. Especially 6-8 months before the chip gets into production. Now with only a month left, Intel has supplied me with their latest and possibly the last engineering sample that will be designed before these chips hit a production life. Today, I will take a look at Intel's latest Extreme Edition processor. Dubbed the Core 2 Extreme X6800, this chip sports a sub 3GHz clock speed, a 1066MHz FSB, a shared 4MB L2 Smart Cache and a whole new architecture designed to launch this chip ahead of the competition and into the hearts of performance enthusiasts.
