AMD's Dual Core 90nm Opteron Demonstration Dissected Review

Posted on Thursday, September 02 2004 @ 23:44:46 CEST by LSDsmurf

For die size comparison purposes AMD had the 130nm Opteron, the single core 90nm Opteron, and the dual core 90nm Opteron on display without their respective heat spreaders. The 90nm Opterons utilize an organic package while current Opterons use the older ceramic package. It is evident that the die size of the dual core is just a bit more than the 130nm Opteron. This means AMD should be able to produce 90nm dual core Opterons at a die cost just above that of present day Opterons, and allowing for even lower cost single core Opterons perhaps aimed at low end servers while dual core takes on heavier duty applications
