Next Generation published an interview with Todd Hollenshead from id Software:
Id Software’s star has dimmed in the last few years. As a developer, its recent release record can best be described as B-, certainly by its own high standards. Doom 3 (2004) was received with muted applause. Its last label game Quake 4 from Raven was a disappointment. Meanwhile, the 3D engine business is being dominated by Epic. There’s a general sense that while Id may have taught the world how to make first person shooters, it has long since ceased to be tutor.

But it would be unwise to see this trajectory as anything other than temporary. Id is still run by the same people with the same ambitions and the same extraordinary talent. There may have been a few off-games in recent years, but the house of Id is remains one that stands for innovation.
