Earlier this week DigiTimes wrote that UMC received a rush order from AMD for 80nm RV505 and RV516 GPUs, with volume amounting to a capacity of 10,000 12-inch wafers:
AMD's rush orders for the older-generation graphics chips follow a recent Nvidia move to have UMC produce its older-generation G72 at 80nm, the paper said. As Nvidia and AMD have already booked much of the 80nm and 65nm capacity at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for their new chips – Nvidia's G84 and G86 and AMD's R610 and R630 – they need UMC's 80nm capacity for the older chips, which are still in strong demand in emerging markets, the paper added.
