After all, the Earth doesn't sit in a vacuum... that would be an awful waste of space.The tool is part of Google Earth 4.2 which can be downloaded over here.
If you're interested in this kind of stuff I also highly recommend a program called Stellarium. You have to enter your coordinates in this program and it will render a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye.
