Microsoft today unveiled the first version of its Silverlight plugin. This technology is a cross-platform multimedia player designed for rich interactive web applications that incorporate video, interactivity and stunning user interfaces.

You can download the Silverlight plugin over here. It's available for Windows and Mac OS X. A Linux version will follow later. Microsoft hopes the media player will be downloaded 200 million times by mid-2008.

Adobe will soon release Moviestar, a new edition of Flash with support for HD video.
