A report by Digitimes Research indicates that 3x optical zoom will become a standard feature on phones with a 5 megapixel digital camera.
A 3x optical zoom, such as that featured in Sony Ericsson's recently introduced 5-megapixel SO905iCS handset, could become a standard feature of 5-megapixel camera handsets, the report added.

The emerging standard follows the trend from 2006 when leading handset vendors were pushing sales of 3-megapixel camera handsets featuring auto focus (AF) functionality, the report said.

Models equipped with a built-in 2-megapixel camera will account for over 50% of camera handset sales in the global market in 2008, according to the report.

However, the proportion of 3-megapixel camera handsets will be higher than that of 2-megapixel models by 2009, stated the report, noting that the ratio of 3-megapixel camera handsets to global camera handsets shipments will reach 66% in 2010.
