EE Times says UMC is hoping to start "small production" of 40/45nm nodes by the end of this year:
"Our leading technology customers continue to prepare for 65-nm production,'' said UMC Chairman and CEO Jackson Hu, in a statement. ''We are also working closely with early adopters for 45/40-nm. Most of them will be in the prototype development stage in the coming months. Finally, we are developing 32-nm with customers as well,'' he said.

The comments were made during UMC's first-quarter results. In a conference call with analysts, Hu said that UMC will have ''prototypes'' at the 40/45-nm node this year, with ''small production'' slated by year's end. The company gave no specifics about the technology, including both 40- and 45-nm processes. But clearly, UMC is behind TSMC in the arena.
