Market research firm Gartner raised its worldwide PC sales forecast for 2008 to 297 million units. The firm expects PC sales will grow 12.5%, up from its earlier forecast of 10.9%.
George Shiffler, research director at Gartner, said mobile PC shipments exceeded prior estimates during the first quarter and continue to have strong momentum in the market. Shiffler estimates that mobile PC sales will rise 30.1% this year from 2007.

Shiffler said a combination of improvements in the technology and design behind notebook PCs, "not only continue to lower the absolute price of mobile PCs, but also continue to improve the value proposition of mobile PCs relative to desk-based PCs."

Shiffler said that PC sales in emerging markets "will remain a key shipment growth segment," and emerging market PC sales are set to grow about 17% from a year ago, in contrast to sales in mature markets, which are forecast to rise 6.3%.
