Samsung to start mass production of 1.7" OLED panels

Samsung SDI plans to start volume production of 1.7-inch OLED (Organic light-emitting diode) panels for handset screens later this month. The company expects to have a monthly capacity of 50,000 glass substrates.

But Samsung is planning to expand their monthly OLED capacity up to 200,000 substrates. These screens will be used by Samsung Electronics but they will also market the panels to other handset mkers.

Samsung SDI announced a 17" OLED display prototype in mid-May of this year, they plann to launch this product in 2005.
