Imagination Technologies unveiled a new PowerVR SGX531 IP (Intellectual Property) core which adds 1080p HD support for high-performance SoCs with 128-bit or higher throughput bus fabrics:
POWERVR SGX531 takes the already industry-leading capabilities of POWERVR SGX IP cores to another new level with an upgraded 128-bit internal bus architecture and related enhancements to maximise performance when integrated in the latest SoCs. This makes POWERVR SGX531 an ideal solution for next generation SoCs, including those targeting 1080p HD resolution displays and high frame rate applications.
Says Tony King-Smith, VP marketing, Imagination Technologies: "POWERVR SGX531 continues our leadership in delivering the strongest roadmap in the business. . Imagination's ongoing R&D innovation in embedded graphics demonstrates we are continually delivering new features and performance levels."
Deliverables are available now for the POWERVR SGX531 IP core, which is already in design with lead customers.
The Tech Report
thinks Intel may use this chip in future Atom products:
Of course, another company will have to license the SGX531 and stick it in an SoC for the core to make it into real products. That company could turn out to be Intel, since the Poulsbo chipset that accompanies the Atom in ultra-mobile PCs already incorporates PowerVR technology. Intel is cooking up a system-on-chip version of Atom code-named Moorestown for 2009-2010, as well.
