Google kills Google Video and five other projects

Besides job cuts Google also closed some of its less popular or redundant projects today, including its Google Video service. This doesn't really come as a surprise as Google Video gets only a fraction of the hits YouTube receives. Users can still access Google Video, but it's no longer possible to upload new videos.

Other services that received the axe:
  • Google Catalog Search: This project made it in to Google Book Search
  • Google Notebook: No further development but it will remain available for the few people who use it.
  • Dodgeball: Has largely been supplanted by Twitter
  • Google Mashup Editor: Terminated in favor of the more powerful App Engine
  • Jaiku: Ported to Google App Engine as opensource, may live on with support from volunteers.
  • Additionally, it's rumored that Grand Central and Knol may be the next projects that will receive the boot.
