Quanta, the largest contract notebook maker, announced its first quarter shipments were about 30 percent lower than the fourth quarter of 2008. The Taiwanese company shipped 6.9 million laptops last quarter, about 2 percent less than expected.
A key supplier to brands such as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ.N), Dell (DELL.O) and Acer (2353.TW), the company had previously said its shipments in the first three months of this year would be about 30 percent lower than the fourth quarter of 2008.

Quanta said in a statement that it shipped 2.7 million laptops in March, and Reuters calculations of company numbers showed Quanta shipped 6.9 million laptop PCs in the January-March quarter.

This is less than the 7.07 million units the company had previously said it was expecting to ship.
