Wafer shipments fell of a cliff in Q1 2009

The SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) reports shipments of silicon wafers fell by 56.5 percent to 940 million square inches in the first quarter of this year. The bad state of the economy had a dire impact on the silicon industry, but SEMI SMG says market conditions have recovered after the bottom observed in January/February.
LONDON — Shipments of silicon wafers fell by 56.5 percent to 940 million square inches compared to 2,163 million square inches in the same quarter a year before, according to the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry.

Shipments fell by 34.2 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2008, when they totaled 1,428 million square inches, SEMI SMG said.
