DigiTimes writes Taiwanese motherboard makers are pessimistic about the new CPU initiative from Japanese tech firms, due to uncertainties in terms of the total costs of R&D manpower and funding.
The Japan-based semiconductor players include NEC, Renesas Technology, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Canon, while the alliance is supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Japan as well as the computer science department of Waseda University in Japan, according to Forbes citing a Nikkei Business News report. The project will have an initial capital of 3-4 billion yen (US$32-43 million).
