EU wants to make electric cars noisier

The European Commission revealed that in February a UN workgroup will start working on a noise system for electric vehicles. The move follows an inquiry from Belgian Member of the European Parliament Ivo Belet, who worried that the lack of noise from silent vehicles like hybrid and electric cars is a danger for pedestrians and bicyclists.

European Commissioner of Industry Günter Verheugen said the workgroup will focus on a minimum noise standard that will aid other road users to estimate where cars are located, how fast they're going and which direction they're driving.
