iSuppli has released a report about the hard disk drive market in the fourth quarter of 2009. Shipments were up 8 percent sequentially, to 162.5 million units. The biggest HDD shipper is Seagate with a marketshare of 31 percent, closely followed by Western Digital at 30 percent, with Hitachi at the third spot with 16 percent, and Toshiba/Fujitsu and Samsung following with 13 percent and 9 percent, respectively.
ISuppli said it expects Seagate to uphold its peak ranking in the first quarter of 2010, with Western Digital remaining runner up. Each company is expected to increase capital expenditures this year to an estimated $750 million, iSuppli said.

Seagate has been the leader in HDDs for more than 30 years, Zhang said. Western Digitial has never finished with higher market share in a quarter, he said.
