HP's Phil McKinney showed off a prototype of a flexible display at a press meeting in Barcelona. The HP Flexible Display is printed on a flexible Mylar plastic plate, you can roll them up a couple of times until they start showing defects, but according to McKinney the real goal here is not to create rollable screens but to create lighter, and more compact laptops, tablets, displays, phones, and other consumer electronics. These new screens feature low energy consumption, they support video and just like e-paper they retain their image when the power is shut down. HP promises the first products based on this technology will enter the market within a year or two, and by 2013 the technology should enter mass production.
