ASUS to ship 50 percent cheaper USB 3.0 controllers

DigiTimes reports ASMedia Technology, a subsidiary of Asustek, is aggressively seeking orders for its USB 3.0 controllers by offering prices of less than $3, which is less than half of the price of the USB 3.0 controller from NEC. ASMedia is expected to start mass shipments of its USB 3.0 chip by the end of June 2010, and the company aims to ship 10 million chips before the end of the year, which is about half of the expected worldwide chipments.

Asustek has already transfer all its USB 3.0 orders to ASMedia with Micro-Star International (MSI), Gigabyte Technology and Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) expected to transfer their orders at later times, the sources said.

With orders from Asustek, ASMedia is expected to ship 10 million USB 3.0 chip in 2010, accounting to half of the expected worldwide shipments.
Another player in the USB 3.0 market will be VIA, but their solution won't be ready for mass shipments until Q4 2010.
