Sources at Taiwanese storage makers revealed to DigiTimes that mainstream laptops will get a 500GB HDD in 2011, up from 320GB in 2010, while netbooks will go 320GB.
International vendors have offered 7mm-thin 2.5-inch HDDs for use in notebooks, the sources indicated. To encourage adoption by notebook makers, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is offering 7mm 2.5-inch 500GB HDDs for same prices as 9.5mm equivalents, the sources said. Notebooks equipped with 7mm 2.5-inch 500GB HDDs will account for about 30% of all notebooks at the end of 2011, the sources noted.
