DigiTimes heard both ASUS and Acer expect a significant drop in netbook sales in 2011 due to the rising popularity of tablets. ASUS expects shipments will decline from 6.8 million units in 2009 to 4-4.5 million units in 2011, and Acer also expects it will no longer be able to sell 7 million netbooks in the new year.
Affected by the growing popularity of table PCs, global shipments of netbooks are set to decline in 2011. Consequently, Asustek Computer is expected to see its shipments of netbooks decline to 4-4.5 million units in 2011 accounting for 25% of its total notebook shipments, compared to about six million units and a ratio of 50% projected for 2010, according to an estimate by industry sources.

Asustek shipped 5.8 and 6.8 million netbooks in 2008 and 2009, respectively, accounting for 45% of the company's total shipments of notebooks in the two years.
