Over the last couple of years power supplies have become a lot more energy efficient. Just over a handful of years ago high-end power supplies barely achieved an efficiency of 70 percent but thanks to initiatives like 80Plus the energy efficiency of these computer parts has improved significantly.

An increasing number of consumers are interested in greener power supplies and PSU makers are more and more using efficiency rates to market their products. Enermax for instance will show off its first 80Plus Platinum unit at CeBIT next week. The EXX900 is rated at 900W, it has a modular cable design and achieves an efficiency of 91.07 percent, 92.51 percent, and 90.12 percent at 20 percent, half and full load, respectively.

What will be the next step after Platinum? Rhodium perhaps, but it doesn't ring as good as the other precious metals.
