DigiTimes reports UMC will break ground for new factory buildings at its 300mm Fab 12A in the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) in May. The new plants will focus on 28nm production.
UMC internally expects 28nm processes to account for 5% of company revenues by the end of 2012, while the 40nm segment will take a 15% share. UMC is also striving to widen the gap between it and Globalfoundries, stepping up capacity expansion for a solid second place in the foundry rankings.

According to Gartner, TSMC remained the leader in the foundry business with a 48.8% market share, followed by UMC with 12.1%. Third-ranked Globalfoundries caught up with its 2011 market share only 1pp less than UMC's.
