Nintendo revealed they're working on a next-generation handheld console, and that there won't be an updated 3DS because they're satisfied with the hardware as it is.
For several generations of recent handheld game consoles, Nintendo has introduced numerous reiterations of their designs that still belonged to a particular generation and family with similar capabilities. But this will not happen to Nintendo 3DS and there will be no 3DSi, 3DS XL and similar upgrades. Instead, Nintendo has already began preparations for next-generation handheld gaming device.

"I really feel like I am satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it is the best for this generation. What we are thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld," said Shigeru Miyamoto, the general manager of Nintendo entertainment analysis and development, in an interview with IGN web-site.
