It's stunning how fast the smartphone and tablet market are growing, initially released barely four years ago, the number of Android devices in the world has now hit the 500 million milestone! And Android's growth continues to accelerate, in June when Google revealed that 400 million Android devices had been activated the activation rate was 1 million new devices per day, and now over 1.3 million are added every single day.

Most Android devices are still running old versions of the operating system, with Gingerbread (2.3.x) being the most popular flavor. According to the last update to Google's Android Dashboard, 57.5 percent of Android devices run Gingerbread, followed by 20.9 percent running Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.x). The latest version of Android, Jelly Bean, is installed on 1.2 percent of Android devices.
