The big Apple announcement from today is the iPhone 5. This new aluminium model has a 1136 x 640 pixel resolution, versus 960 x 640 on the iPhone 4/4S, keeping the same 326ppi density. The extra pixel estate is used to add an extra row of icons on the start screen, Apple apps are tweaked to take advantage of the extra pixels, while other apps will be displayed in a letterbox format.

The screen features "touch sensor in-cell" (TSIC), which integrated the touch technology into the LCD itself. This technology reportedly enhances outside visibility and promises 44 higher color saturation.

More processing power is provided by the new A6 SoC, Apple says this dual-core chip has twice the CPU power and twice the graphics performance, while consuming less energy than the A5.

Other features include 4G LTE support, a faster 8MP digicam with better image quality in low light environments, three microphones for better Siri performance, iOS 6 and longer battery life. The phone is also thinner and lighter than before, it's now just 7.8mm (18% thinner than the 4S) and 20 percent lighter at 112g.

Other things to take in mind is that the iPhone 5 has adopted Apple's nano-SIM standard, making it incompatible with current SIM cards, and that it uses Lightning, a new proprietary dock connectors. Lightning is 80 percent smaller than the previous dock connector but an adapter to make it compatible with current accessories using 30-pin connectors will cost a whopping $29, and an a Lightning-to-MicroUSB adapter costs a whopping 19EUR in the EU.

Availability of the iPhone is slated for September 21, with US prices with contract ranging from $199, $299, and $399 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, respectively.
