Hearing about Western Digital's upcoming 5mm thin 2.5" hybrid disk is one thing, but seeing photos that illustrate how tiny this storage device is makes us marvel about this technological wonder. Full details about the disk aren't available yet, we only know that it has a single-platter with 500GB capacity and 8GB to 32GB of onboard SLC NAND flash memory storage for instant-on and application performance acceleration.

The 5mm hybrid disk is designed for the thinnest ultrabooks, it's developed in cooperation with Intel and Microsoft and features a new, smaller SFF-8038 SATA connector. Bright Side of News had the opportunity to shoot some photos of this ultra-thin HDD.
Western Digital will be working with OEMs and ODMs to work on developing the connector standard further and to determine whether or not the connector will be a direct connect into the motherboard or a ribbon cable. In addition to that, the Hybrid drive version of these drives will be the Black Edition. The Blue Edition is the 500GB hard drive that does not have any NAND flash and is just a 5mm drive.
