Apple iTunes reaches 500 million mark

Apple today announced it has over 500,000,000 songs worldwide via its iTunes online music store.

iTunes lists more than 1.5 million tracks from all four major music companies and over 1,000 independent labels. Apple sells the songs $0.99 while competitors Napster, Yahoo and Real launched their music stores over the past few months with a subscription model.

Three weeks ago Apple released iTunes 4.9 which adds Podcasting.
