DigiTimes reports Globalfoundries is on a capacity expansion spree. The foundry has undertaken big expansion projects at its Singapore and New York manufacturing plants in order to meet growing demand for mobile chips.
Monthly capacity at Globalfoundries' US site, Fab 8, has reached 60,000 12-inch wafers, said Noonen, adding that the facility focuses on the production of chips using 28nm and more advanced process technologies.

Globalfoundries has sent 20nm chip samples to customers for product design and verification, Noonen indicated. Production utilizing the newer node will take place at Fab 8, Noonen said.

Globalfoundries is also accelerating development of 14nm process with 3D FinFET transistors, which will be ready for trial production at Fab 8 around the end of 2013, Noonen noted.

Meanwhile, Globalfoundries has been expanding capacity at its Singapore site, Fab 7, with installation of its newly-acquired 12-inch fab equipment form ProMOS Technologies, Noonen said. Annual capacity of the unit is expected to reach one million 12-inch wafers in 2014, Noonen indicated.
