While just 10.58 percent of the overall PC market has picked up Windows 8.x, gamers are adopting the new operating system at a much faster rate. The latest Steam userbase report from Valve reveals that the total amount of Windows 8.x users using Steam stood at 21.31 percent in January, up from 20.06 percent in December 2013.

While Microsoft's Windows 8.x seems poised to break the 25% marketshare mark in the coming months, Valve's initiative to push Linux gaming fails to gain ground. Just 0.86 percent of Steam gamers used Linux in January, a 0.21 drop versus the month before.
TNW processed Valve's extensive breakdown of OS usage figures into a much shorter (than Valve's) combined list as below:

  • Windows 8.1: 10.75 percent
  • Windows 8: 10.56 percent
  • Windows 7: 63.04 percent
  • Windows XP: 6.25 percent
  • Windows Vista: 4.30 percent
  • Mac OS X: 3.47 percent
  • Linux: 0.86 percent

Turning to the non-Microsoft OSes, Mac OS X and Linux lost the same percentage of users each during the month: 0.21 per cent.
