DigiTimes writes both Micron and SK Hynix have plans to invest in Taiwanese SSD controller IC design houses including including Silicon Motion Technology, Phison Electronics and JMicron Technology. The goal of the investment is to improve their competitiveness as SSD makers fear that they may need to seek alternative suppliers due to recent market developments:
Seagate Technology's decision to acquire LSI's accelerated solutions division (ASD) and flash components division (FCD) from Avago has made some clients worry that LSI will ship its SSD controllers mainly to Seagate, pushing them to seek alternative suppliers, said the sources.

Silicon Motion has been cooperating with SK Hynix for years, and Phison has been tied up with Micron and Kingston Technology, the sources indicated.
