UMC announed it's building a 300mm wafer fab in Xiamen, China but noted that it will keep its advanced manufacturing processes, mainly 14nm and 28nm, in Taiwan. The new plant in China will start producing chips by the end of 2016 using 40/55nm processes.
UMC will build the 12-inch fab in Xiamen in cooperation with Xiamen Municipal Government, and Fujian Electronics and Information Group. The new plant, which requires a total investment of up to US$6.2 billion, is scheduled to start production by the end of 2016 and will have a production capacity of 50,000 wafers a month, using 55/40nm processes initially.
