The rendering is done a laptop and the scope shows the generated audio signal as two dimensional vector graphics.

Here's something you don't see everyday: a Finnish programmer decided to dedicate his time to getting Quake running on an old oscilloscope. It looks hardly playable but it's a pretty cool feat.
