Last week we already wrote on DV Hardware that Intel has simplified its Atom naming scheme by going for new branding that resembles the product differentiation of the Core processors.

Now The Tech Report has some extra information, including specifications, that reveals in greater detail how Intel will differentiate its mobile market segments. The site writes the upcoming Cherry Trail platform will be launched under the new Atom x5 and x7 series, these chips will be made on a 14nm process and will have the same Gen8 graphics as the Broadwell lineup.
The Airmont CPU cores are die-shrunk versions of the Silvermont cores that debuted inside Bay Trail. Accordingly, Intel says Cherry Trail offers "very similar" CPU performance. Power consumption and battery life, too, are supposed to be similar to last year's offerings.

What has changed since last year is in the graphics department. The new Gen8 IGP makes Cherry Trail quite a bit faster than Bay Trail, by Intel's account. Compared to the Atom Z3795, Intel says the new Atom x7 delivers gains of up to 2X in GFXBench 2.7's T-Rex HD scene and up to 50% in 3DMark's Ice Storm Unlimited test.
