A couple of years ago AMD hired Rory Read as CEO in an attempt to get the company back on track. During his short tenure, he shuffled top management, cut jobs, increased the firm's focus on custom chips and revamped the product roadmap. Uner his leadership, AMD was able to hit a few quarters of profit but the firm's financials remain shaky at best. He was replaced by Lisa Su in October 2014 and now PC World reports Rory Read has taken up a job at Dell as head of the firm's global commercial sales division.
Read will be responsible for sales planning and execution as president of worldwide commercial sales and chief operating officer of the company’s Enterprise Solutions Group. He will report to Marius Haas, who is Dell’s Chief Commercial Officer and President of the Enterprise Solutions Group.

While the Dell job may seem like a step down for Read, he’s taking on a role he has a lot of experience in, said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research. In previous jobs at Lenovo and IBM, Read played a strong role in maintaining partnerships, and he’ll be doing the same thing at Dell, McCarron said.
