Previous rumors suggested NVIDIA's new flagship video card for the laptop market would be called GeForce GTX 990M but now SweClockers claims the card will simply be called GeForce GTX 980 - which is very confusing as it would be the same name as the desktop model.

While the GeForce GTX 980M is based on a GM204 with 1536 CUDA cores, the site claims this new mobile GeForce GTX 980 will be based on a fully-fledged GM204 GPU with 2048 CUDA cores and 8GB of GDDR5 memory.

Performance-wise this mobile GTX 980 is expected to be on par with a GeForce GTX 970M in SLI or a desktop GeForce GTX 970.

The card is expected to have a variable TDP of 100W to 185W, this will give PC builders some free hand in using lower clocked versions for small computers with limited cooling, while systems with more advanced cooling can deliver the chip's full performance capabilities.
