Word is going around that MediaTek is among the potential buyers of PMC-Sierra, an acquisition that would help it to get into the SSD controller market:
Rumors have circulated in the industry that MediaTek is among the potential buyers of PMC-Sierra, which also include some China-based venture-capital companies. Acquiring the US-based firm would help MediaTek step into the SSD controller business.

MediaTek has previously announced acquisitions of Richtek Technology and ILI Technology (Ilitek), with both deals scheduled to close in the second quarter of 2016. MediaTek has also recently taken over Integrated Silicon Solution's (ISSI) Taiwan subsidiary Chingis Technology.
Huawei on the other hand has reportedly begun development of SSD controller chips in-house, they will initially focus on the enterprise SSD market. The report mentions Huawei's controller will satisfy the company's own demand for data centers.

The current big players in the SSD controller market are Marvell, Phison Electronics and Silicon Motion Technology. Samsung developers its controllers in-house and Intel is partnering with Silicon Motion.
