Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology ceases production of optical disk drives

KitGuru picked up news that a major player has left the optical disk drive market. The Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) joint-venture is reportedly no longer making optical drives, production has been halted and the last few batches will be shipped before the end of the year.

If correct, this means LG and Liteon could be the only remaining ODD makers by the end of the year.
This has left some third parties purportedly low on stock and could mean just LG and Liteon are the remaining ODD makers by the end of the year. Our source on this news claimed that two separate people working for optical companies that rely on TSST hardware confirmed this rumour, stating that TSST has halted production entirely and will ship out its last few batches before the end of the year.
