BenQ is planning to launch its Blu-Ray DVD-ROM drives in the first or second quarter of next year.

By the first quarter of next year Sony, the key member of the Blu-Ray Disc Association (BDA), also plans to bring its first Blu-Ray optical drives to the market.

On the other side of the fence, Sanyo plans to release its first chipsets for use in HD DVD drives by the first half of next year. These chips will offer support for HD DVD, DVD and CD discs.

Lite-On hasn't made a final decision between Blu-Ray and HD DVD but the company plans to offer its first next-generation DVD drives when the market emerges, possibly in Q1 2006.
