Mozilla axe its Firefox OS project

I never understood what Mozilla was trying to achieve with Firefox OS, an operating system designed for low-end smartphones and tablets, as it was hard to see how this would ever be competitive with Android.

Mozilla came to the same conclusion some time ago, and now OS News reports all commercial development on Firefox OS has been ceased because the project did not deliver the kind of returns Mozilla sought:
Since then we have gradually wound down that work and, as of the end of July 2016 have stopped all commercial development on Firefox OS. This message recaps what transpired during that period of time and also describes what will happen with the Firefox OS code base going forward.
