At the Oculus Connect conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased a prototype of "Santa Cruz", a next-generation augmented reality/virtual reality headset that doesn't need a PC. Not a lot of details were revealed but the device seems to have some integrated smartphone-level hardware and one of the novelties is that this headset promises inside-out tracking, without the need for an external camera/sensor system or a connection to a PC.

Zuckerberg refused to share a lot of details but said the goal is to make this device cheaper than the Rift. The early prototype is based on a modified Rift, some folks who tested it were quite impressed but overall it still needs a lot of work to make it ready for commercialization.
Today we unveiled the Santa Cruz feature prototype, an all-in-one VR device. We’ve made a ton of progress on the software for inside-out tracking that makes this whole category possible.
