SoftBank gobbles up robot maker Boston Dynamics

Posted on Friday, June 09 2017 @ 09:25:59 CEST by

Remember the awesome robot designs from Boston Dynamics? Well the company now has a new owner. Rumors popped up last year that Alphabet wanted to sell Boston Dynamics and now the Google parent company sold the robotics firm to SoftBank.
“Today, there are many issues we still cannot solve by ourselves with human capabilities. Smart robotics are going to be a key driver of the next stage of the Information Revolution, and Marc and his team at Boston Dynamics are the clear technology leaders in advanced dynamic robots,” said SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son, in a statement. “I am thrilled to welcome them to the SoftBank family and look forward to supporting them as they continue to advance the field of robotics and explore applications that can help make life easier, safer, and more fulfilling.”
SoftBank is a Japanese telecom and technology giant. The company bought ARM for $31.4 billion less than a year ago and last month news emerged SoftBank also bought $4 billion worth of NVIDIA shares on the open market. The company is putting together a pretty nice portfolio via its own purchases as well as its Vision Fund.
