Last week there was a story about molded and unmolded versions of AMD's Vega 10 GPUs. Now some more information surfaced, including some slides that AMD send to its add-in board (AIB) partners.

There are at least three versions of Vega 10, with two of them in production. The molded version is made in Taiwan, these ASICs feature epoxy resin to protect the chips, feature Samsung HBM2 and are used for the Radeon RX Vega 64 cards. The unmolded version does not use resin, this version is reportedly reserved for the Radeon RX 56. It's made in South Korea and uses SK Hynix HBM2.

The third variant was reportedly exclusively used for engineering boards, it's a resinless version cooked up in Taiwan. Additionally, there are also rumors about a fourth resin version stricly for the RX Vega 56 but that hasn't been confirmed yet.

The resinless versions are a bit more fragile, that may be the biggest concern for enthusiasts but only in case you want to swap your cooler. Other than this, it's mainly a headache for board partners as the molded and unmolded variants differ in terms of heatsink contact area and ASIC height. AMD's board partners are reportedly experimenting with different screw lengths to avoid potential heat issues.
