Intel's marketing department decided the company's Pentium lineup was too complicated so they're introducing a new name to make it easier to differentiate the various products.

Basically, the name of the "Kaby Lake" based Pentium desktop processors changes to "Pentium Gold". This new brand indicates these are low-end processors for the desktop market.

The regular "Pentium" name will remain for the Atom-based parts, which are energy-efficient chips for laptops and other mobile devices.
