Word is going around that NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce GPUs are codename Ampere. It was long believed that Volta would be the successor to the current Pascal series in the consumer market but a new report from German tech site Heise claims otherwise.

The site heard whispers that NVIDIA is planning to reveal details about its next-gen gaming GPUs at GTC 2018. This event is scheduled for March 26-29, 2018. As always, take this rumor with a grain of salt. GTC isn't really NVIDIA's typical launch venue for these sort of products.

If the rumor is accurate, it could mean that NVIDIA's Volta is exclusively for the AI and datacenter market. Over the past couple of months, there have been some rumors that there could be a Pascal refresh. Is that limited to the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti or does NVIDIA have more cards up its sleeve?

One thing is for sure, NVIDIA has been doing a pretty good job recently of keeping details about its future roadmap under wraps. At the moment, we know too little about Ampere to guess whether it will be a further evolution of Pascal or a new revolution in the GPU market.
