Rambus: HBM3 to double the bandwidth to 4000Mbps

Posted on Thursday, December 07 2017 @ 14:06 CET by Thomas De Maesschalck
A new slide from Rambus details some of the key target features of the upcoming HBM3 and DDR5 memory technologies. The memory solutions designer indicates both HBM3 and DDR5 will hit the market on the 7nm node, which indicates these two memory solutions won't arrive until 2019 at the earliest. The official specifiation hasn't been set yet so these specs are subject to change.

Rambus already has functioning DDR5 prototypes and the company expects the official standard will target a frequency of 4800MHz to 6400MHz, which is up to twice as much as DDR4.

The slide also indicates HBM3 could offer double the bandwidth of HBM2, while also allowing more complex design architectures.
